How to treat your calabash? (first use only)

Before you even begin the traditional mate experience, it is important to treat your calabash. This step should only be done before the first use. However, it is not necessary to do this if your gourd is made of ceramic or stainless steel.

Why is it important to do this?

  • To avoid an unpleasant first experience

  • To remove live bacteria

  • To remove organic detritus

  • To close the pores of the inner layer with maté

Step 1 :

Add hot water at 100ºC to your calabash

Step 2 :

Take a spoon and gently scrape the inside surfaces of your calabash for 3 minutes and discard as much loose plant material as you can

Step 3 :

Fill 3/4 of your calabash with yerba mate and follow the steps "how to prepare mate according to the argentinean method".

Step 4 :

Enjoy your first traditional mate.

When you are finished, add hot water (do not go past the steel ring) and wait 12 hours before emptying. Your calabash is now processed and ready for adventure.
